According to growers, climate change is one of the biggest problems they are currently facing. Farmers are at the frontline of having to deal with the impacts of global warming as it often results in unpredictable rainfall and long-lasting droughts.
Fairtrade works together with farmers and farmer organizations to combat climate change. Fairtrade does this in the following ways:
1. The most harmful pesticides are banned.
2. Motivating Fairtrade cooperatives to set up reforestation projects to promote CO2 capture and storage.
3. Informing companies that growing trees and crops together improves soil fertility and provides farmers with alternative cash flows.
4. Providing trainings on climate change.
5. Motivating cooperatives to spend the Fairtrade premium on nature conservation projects.
6. Motivating companies to switch to green energy.
7. Offer carbon credits to enable companies to compensate their CO2 emissions.
8. Motivating companies to spend the Fairtrade premium to reduce water consumption.
