The Fairtrade system seeks to address the injustices of conventional trade through social, economic, and environmental change to enable communities sustainably support themselves by tackling the root causes of poverty.
What does this mean for flowers and plants that are bought through Fairtrade?
This means that flowers and plants sourced through Fairtrade give your company the assurance that high standards have been followed throughout the supply chain, from the flower farm to your supplier. Fairtrade Standards support social, economic, and environmentally sustainable best practices. The Fairtrade Standards have been developed through intensive consultation with all Fairtrade stakeholders, including the farms, civil society organizations and commercial partners including traders.
What do these Fairtrade standards mean?
Fairtrade leads to decent livelihoods, better working conditions and improved health protection for thousands of workers on certified flower farms. Most of the Fairtrade certified farms are in Kenya and Ethiopia, and women make up close to half of the workforce. Flower workers self-determine their own projects, which benefit the whole community through the Fairtrade Premium, which is raised from the sale of each flower stem. Flower farms and their workers also benefit from hands-on support and trainings from the local Fairtrade producer network, which has field officers in every country and supports workers and the farms to network and learn from each other. Fairtrade supports sustainable farming practices such as safe use of chemicals and protecting water sources. This means improved health for farm workers as well as the health of the land.
