Sustainability in bloom at Feiko Sonneveld

Thursday 21 December 2023

Feiko Sonneveld's celosia is a beauty to have in your assortment. When growing this beautiful flower, sustainability plays a big role for Feiko.

Feiko started growing asters as a grower since 1989. From 2006, he has been growing celosia. He normally grows celosia from March to December and chrysanthemums between January and March. Thanks to many adjustments in his nursery (including special LED lights), he can now grow celosia (almost) all year round and no longer needs to grow any other assortment between December and mid-March.

To minimise the use of chemical pesticides, he uses special biological control which helps against thrips, spider mites and aphids. Montdo-mite is a special predatory mite that fights thrips but also takes spider mites with it when it encounters them. For this, it has a special cart programmed to spray the 40-metre lanes automatically. Compared to eight years ago, Feiko now uses 80% less chemical pesticides.
