At the Trade Fair Aalsmeer, Porta Nova presented its most sustainable rose: the Red Naomi Futura. This is the first product with a calculation according to the now approved FloriPEFCR method. The Red Naomi Futura has a very low emission of 56 g CO2 per stem.
This achievement is the result of years of effort and investment. Porta Nova has implemented sustainability measures such as heat and cold storage, LED lighting and a private electricity cable. By switching to 100% wind energy, the company can now guarantee an ultra-low footprint. This fits perfectly with their mission to grow the best roses in the world with minimal impact on the environment.
In addition to CO₂ savings, Porta Nova has implemented other sustainable techniques. Rainwater is collected and reused through a closed system, without waste or soil pollution. Pests are controlled biologically, using natural enemies and UVC light.
Porta Nova's approach is in line with the new European FloriPEFCR standard, which calculates the environmental impact of ornamental plant products accurately and transparently. This standard was co-developed by Wageningen University and was approved by the European Union early this year. Through its standardized calculation method, the FloriPEFCR ensures that the ecological footprint of flowers and plants can be reliably calculated.
Porta Nova's initiative emphasizes that sustainability and quality can go hand in hand. The company hopes others will want to collaborate to prove together that a low footprint is possible, even with a minuscule additional cost.
