Sustainable gerberas at Villa Gerbera

Sustainability plays a role in almost everything Villa Gerbera does. We got a look at the measures they take to grow their gerberas as sustainably as possible.

The family business has set the LED lights above the gerberas so that when there is a shortage on the local power grid, the lighting switches to purple LED light. As a result, the nursery saves energy and households can continue to use electricity with peace of mind.

In addition, Villa Gerbera generates its own electricity through a combined heat and power system. They do this not only for their own use, but also for 11,000 households in the area. And did you know that the company collects, purifies and stores all excess water for later reuse?

But the latest investment is plastic trunks suspended above the crop. These trunks draw air from outside, which is mixed with air from the greenhouse and heated by a radiator. The air then disperses throughout the nursery, keeping the temperature constant and reducing the need to open the windows, thus reducing heat loss.

The nursery will soon switch to geothermal heat, along with several other companies in the area.
