What do you do if you want to limit the use of chemical pesticides in your crop? Then you look for biological solutions.

Jeroen Hoogenboom proudly talks about the spiders he uses to control thrips in his phloxes. 'Thrips damage the crop by draining plant cells. By using natural enemies, we need to use fewer chemical pesticides.'

Another fine solution, is to sow empty plots with grass. This eliminates the need to spray them with chemicals and keeps the land healthy naturally. Simple but effective!

With the launch of a certification scheme for small-scale growers from the Floriculture Sustainability Initiative (FSI) and with clear sustainability requirements for certification, the final step has now been taken towards 100% FSI-compliance for all growers. Earlier, leading growers and buyers together with Royal FloraHolland (RFH) agreed on 100% sustainability certification with an established roadmap. Meanwhile, about three quarters of the sales traded through the RFH platform are certified.
