Working with students to become more sustainable!

Wednesday 22 January 2025

FM Group participated in this year's autumn edition of the SDG Challenge. The SDG-Challenge is a format where students collaborate with business partners to work towards the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The mission of the SDG-Challenge is to enable organisations to achieve their sustainability ambitions and to train students to become future ‘changemakers’ for a more sustainable world.

As a business partner, FM Group submitted a sustainability issue to students, who have been working on it since October. The original question stemmed from our problem that during the buying and selling process of flowers and plants, waste is created in the form of flower and plant residues, packaging materials and other by-products

The students were tasked with finding sustainable ways to minimise these waste streams, improve their separation, and develop and find new uses for these residual streams. During the showcase fair on 16 January was the presentation of their final product. Several companies and student teams were able to showcase their project.

It was also possible to take part in speed dates between companies and students during the showcase fair. This way, we got the chance to talk to a number of students and tell them about our sector, FM Group, and of course FM Group's sustainability strategy. Perhaps in this way we were able to get some students excited about a job at FM Group.

Sustainability is an important value these days for young people to say yes to a job. Hopefully, we have thus been able to generate positive attention for our fine sector and our company. With the final document delivered by the students and their recommendations, we are definitely a few steps closer to a solution. Thank you to this nice international team of students who, with hard work, were able to deliver this within 3 months.
