Product of the Future: Innovation at Vlasveld Groentechnieken

Monday 09 December 2024

In Boskoop lies a pearl of innovation and sustainability: Vlasveld Groentechnieken. This progressive nursery, specialising in skimmia flowers, cut hydrangea, eucalyptus and Christmas greens, proves that sustainable business is not only necessary, but can also be successful. With their almost entirely organic approach, they set a great example for the ornamental plant cultivation sector.

From chemical agents to biological balance

Vlasveld Groentechnieken's journey began in 2020 when chemical pesticides did not yield sufficient results. Under the leadership of Ronald Vlasveld, the decision was made to fully commit to organic cultivation. Now, four years later, the nursery is 98% organic and works with Skal-certified products from AB in Weesp.

The conversion brought challenges, but the hard work paid off. Through preventive organic control and the use of biostimulants, the crops are not only stronger but also healthier. The result? A cleaner product, a more vital grower, as well as a significant 80% reduction in pesticide use.

Biological helpers and smart techniques

A tour of the nursery offers a fascinating insight into Vlasveld's innovative methods. Predatory mites and small spiders are used to control insect pests naturally. The spiders in particular, from the company Little Spider, attract attention.

Using techniques such as ‘ballooning’-where spiders move through the wind on a silk thread-these biological helpers stay active in the crops. They are a sustainable solution against pests without the need for chemicals.

In addition, liquid foliar fertilisers with organic silicon strengthen plant resistance. This approach ensures stronger roots, healthier leaves and improved flowering.

Long-term investment, sustainable result

Developing these biological techniques requires patience. Ronald explains: ‘You don't achieve the ideal composition of fertilisers and biostimulants in one season. You test on a small scale, adjust, and gradually build this up to larger fields.’

However, the efforts pay off: customers receive top-quality produce, grown in a way that is good for both soil and trade.

Why this has relevance

For growers and florists, organic growing means more than environmental gains. It delivers higher-quality products and strengthens ties with customers who value sustainability. By focusing on healthy soils and strong plants, Vlasveld bridges the gap between economic profit and ecological responsibility.

Ronald puts it aptly: ‘Healthy soils and strong plants make for satisfied customers.’

Industry inspiration

Vlasveld Groentechnieken demonstrates that sustainability and innovation go hand in hand. Their willingness to share knowledge and experiment makes them a pioneer in the floriculture sector.
