The power of the sun
Last month, Bionext organised an online seminar on natural pest management in organic ornamental cultivation
During this webinar, scientist Felix Bianchi of Wageningen University (WUR) shared his research findings. In addition, organic rose grower Hans van Hage of De Bierkreek gave practical examples from his cultivation practice.
The webinar discussed how to attract and deploy beneficial insects such as lacewings, parasitic wasps and ladybirds to control pests. It also discussed the role of aphids in a healthy ecosystem.
To promote a healthy population of natural enemies, a number of pre-conditions are important. These include planting flowering plants, providing hiding and overwintering places, and providing suitable food. This can be done, for example, by planting woody plants, early flowering plants for a long flowering period, and native flowering plants. Customisation is essential here.
