The power of the sun
The importance of climate is recognised worldwide, including on flower farms in Kenya. Utee Estate Ltd, a Fairtrade-certified flower farm, showed during a visit in September how they are climate conscious.
They have switched from chemical pesticides and fertilisers to homemade organic alternatives, encouraged by Fairtrade standards that prohibit the use of harmful pesticides.
Utee Estate has set up a small laboratory where they have tested different mixtures on flowers. They even studied the eating habits of cows to find suitable herbs and plants for their organic pesticides. They mix the fertile soil from the surrounding hills with local ingredients.
The result is impressive: less soil depletion, insects stay away, lower plant fertiliser costs, healthier working conditions and less major climate impact!
Utee Estate has already replaced forty to fifty per cent of pesticides and aims for 100% homemade organic alternatives.
